Joaquin Phoenix goes all MC JP on yo face
In a move that has the music press baffled and amused, Joaquin Phoenix appears to be pursuing a hip hop career.
Joaquin recently announced he was retiring from acting to focus on music and since he'd done such a great job portraying Johnny Cash PLUS the scruffy hipster beard, most of us probably assumed he'd go into some alt folk country rock indie thing or the like. But the dude wants to rap.
And, according to Rolling Stone, which got it from The Hollywood Reporter, the quest to become the new Eminem (or Vanilla Ice) will be filmed by Joaquin's brother in law Casey Affleck (apparently he's married to Summer Phoenix who, a web search reveals, has acted in plenty of indie films and has been a vegan since birth) and the thing will become a feature length documentary. AND word on the mean streets is that Diddy is going to produce the former actor's album.
I bet you're dying to know what he sounds like busting rhymes. Well, here you go! This video is from a live performance at LAVO nightclub in Las Vegas.
When he was done he fell off the stage. There's also this one.
Yeah, I don't know either. Eminem doesn't have anything to worry about just yet.
At least he's enjoying himself right? He told People.com, "This is me saying this is who I am. This is my story. After all the years of reading scripts and reading lines, this is my chance to do something straight from the heart and put it out there. When I was young I liked punk rock music but then I discovered rap. I love the storytelling aspect of hip-hop. Are there people out there who think I'm a joke? I'm sure there will be. Are there people who think it's going to suck? Probably, but I can't worry about that."
Or maybe he's joking. It could be a joke right? And the resulting movie will be one of the most hilarious mocumentaries ever.
Chances are he'll go back to movies. It feels like celebrities always announce they're retiring but they never do.

Im sorry but this is just weird...he looks totally different ( like he gained 40 pounds or something and the whole bohemien thing?), his rapping doesnt sound great at all (but it's a badly filmed youtube clip..so i guess it might sound better), and last his claim he's retiring from acting (that's a new one, never heard that before).
Look, nothing again Joaquin because he's a great actor but i find when actors (or actresses) are bored & dont know what to do with all that money they have, they decided to pull a huge 360 on us and do something completely off the wall like this.
Music and Actors are like peanut butter and jelly these days like Russell Crowe, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Bacon, Hilary Duff, Lindsey Lohan, Miley Cryus and everyone in the movie High School Musical but rapping is a whole different thing...you cant just start rapping because you think your good at it, you gotta build street cred before..no matter who is producing your album (in this case Diddy).
Rap is not just a style of music, it's a way of life and sure, i think im good at it and i was brought up with B.I.G, Tupac, Common, and so more many more amazing rappers and i was raised on very tough streets but that doesnt mean i can just pretend im a "rapper" because i just decided that on a boring sunday afternoon with nothing to do.
No matter how long you've been rapping to your friends, girlfriends, by yourself in the shower or between takes on your last movies...this is a very bad move.
People see you as a serious and dedicated actor, doing this will just make a mockery of all the work you've done in the past and future.
Maybe you dont care about what people say but they are the people who will buy the cd.
Seriously, wish you all the best but really, no matter if the cd is good or not, get ready for alot of cheap shots and jokes from late night tv, newpaper and magazine articles, blogs, youtube and so much more..
Before you read the next few lines...let me just mention that I AM NOT COMPARING THE TWO PEOPLE, THESES ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH TOTALLY DIFFERENT LIVES..ok? Here we go..i actually liked Kevin Federline's cd, and the vocals were pretty tight and the rapping was good but what ever happened to him?
Check the 99 cent bin.
