Bono accused of hypocrisy, again

Getty Images Former Talking Head David Byrne is calling out Bono, and pointing out the irony of U2's extravagant world tour. David writes on his journal, (found via the Daily Swarm)

"Those stadium shows may possibly be the most extravagant and expensive (production-wise) ever: $40 million to build the stage and, having done the math, we estimate 200 semi trucks crisscrossing Europe for the duration. It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all. Or maybe it's the fact that we were booted off our Letterman spot so U2 could keep their exclusive week-long run that's making me less than charitable? Take your pick — but thanks, guys!"

Professional envy? Perhaps. But Byrne wouldn't be the first to observe the U2 frontman's apparent hypocrisy.

In 2006, when he moved his music publishing business from Ireland to the Netherlands, critics like Slate's Timothy Noah couldn't help pointing out that leftist celebrities' "embrace of progressivism almost never includes a wholehearted embrace of progressive taxation," while Bloomberg's Fergal O'Brien stated, "Bono, the rock star and campaigner against Third World debt, is asking the Irish government to contribute more to Africa. At the same time, he's reducing tax payments that could help fund that aid."

Also in 2006, there was much eye rolling and head shaking when Bono's company Elevation Partners bought up 40 % of Forbes Publishing, whose flagship publication bears the motto, "The Capitalist Tool." The Daily Mail ran an article titled St. Bono the Hyocprite, detailing, "How U2's frontman built a £1billion business empire ... while bullying the rest of us to make poverty history."

Yep, so, nothing new here. And, as one Daily Swarm commenter pointed out, those 200 trucks have to carry Bono's ego. Ha!

Bono only uses caring for the world as a marketing ploy. if you haven't realized that yet theres something wrong with you. He is the biggest piece of sh*t in the world.

In regards to the commentary above, should look at himself first. Before judging a book by its cover. ( hint hint.) As far as Bonos concerned at least hes doing something for himself and what makes him feel good. To many bad commentaries out there. That have nothin better to say about anyone.

Bono is, and always will be, the biggest two-faced a-hole egomaniac on the planet. Here's hoping that the latest world tour will be U2's last one, They're about 17 years and a million miles way from the last time they did anything that was worth listening to.

FAME = FORTUNE = BONO'S BIG EGO = SUBCONSCIOUS MIND THINKING ABOUT MEANING OF LIFE DURING THE LONG DAYS ON THE ROAD IN THE HUGE U2 CARAVAN = THINKING OF TROUBLED AFRICA = GUILT ( A VERY MILD FORM ) = WANTING TO RAISE MONEY FOR IMPOVERISHED PEOPLE OF AFRICA = COLLABORATION WITH OPRAH (watch the show even she seemed kind of taken aback with Bono's pushiness) = LESS GUILT BECAUSE YOU DID YOUR LITTLE BIT = CONTINUE BUILDING THE BONO EMPIRE = A HERO???Yes......... but I think actions speak louder than words" ACTIONS IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES " Bono, please rethink your actions and STOP LETTING YOUR EGO DRIVE YOU.

I dont get it people, he given a ton of time and money to several different causes NO ONE should have the right to say he has to give up 100% of his personal income.he putting out a message for the causes he believes in by staying in the spot light and by using some of his personal income.how many of you out thier gave even a lousy 20$ bill for a charity and for ' Talking Head David Byrne ' how much money has he put forward for a charitable cause. BONO approched several "HEADS of State'((canada, usa, britian just to name a few) convinced them to donate to africia put money into a cure for AIDS. unless you tried to make a differnce yourself stop complaining about bono...find a mirror look at yourself and ask... WHAT IS IT,that i can do to make a difference. till you do , you cant complain about anyone elts

Bono is a farce when it comes to being concerned about world hunger and poverty. He may give 'a miniscual fraction of one percent' of his income and this would affect his personal standard of living not one iota. And all the while he is chastising governments (and in turn the common taxpayers - many of whom already live near the poverty line) to give more.
All of these entertainment types make me ill....they who proport to be so concerned about the third world but still live their own lives in extreme oppulance.
I never saw one of them in a third world country who got there via economy class travel nor lived in the digs and ate the food with the people out in the villages.
The cost of one of Madonna's or Angelina's trips to adopt a third world child or Clooney's on site visits would feed the people in many villages for a year. How can anyone give them allocades for that??

hmmm, were all guilty of hypocrisy, one way or another... But united to hate one...kinda old news, and fairly boring. Now can we focus on someone actually worth being role modeled?
People all think supporting him will help, those 'compromised'....were all guilted, we've bought into it as some point in our lives. Forget about Bono and his quest for selfish gain, and think, have you ever helped someone randomly? Given the homeless guy a meal as you walk into that $300 a meal restaurant? It's like the pot calling the kettle black, it's old news and same BS, just on a grander scale.

I agree with Brian...how could you expect someone to give up everything they have??? Think of all he has given already and everything's he's done greatly outweighs his income. He has made it so easy for you to help Africa and he's even made it fun. If he wasn't huge...he'd be little...and who listens to the little guy? Bono has to be huge for the things he is doing. U2's music is the greatest of all time...nothing you try to say will change that.

okay seriously.... even if bono makes a lot of money and even if he hasnt donated all of it to charity... hes still donated a hell of a lot more than you or me.
money makes money, you cant give all of it away all the time, you've got to invest in things to keep it growing not just keep giving it away, how can he ever do anything for anyone if hes doesnt make the money to do it??? and how can he continue to do that if he doesnt hold the concerts (even the 40 million ones) and invest into successful companies (forbes)? taxes are HUGE they take like over 60% of your wage in some countries, when you make that much money, not to mention all the other costs that probably come. the guy has a right to earn a living even if its way more than you or i make... and no matter what anyone on here says hes still done WAY more to help starving children than you and i have, or ever will.

And Amber? If you only have $10 and you give $1 away, it means something. If you have $500 million and you give $50 thousand away, it means nothing. No sacrifice whatsoever. Sharing your sandwich with someone when that's all you've got to eat for the day is more meaninfull than a tax deductable charity donation of a million. Have I made myself clear?

Boner ! says:

Some years ago Bono came to Canada and had a private tete a tete with our then Prime Minister. Bono wanted Canada to donate an amount equal to 10 % of our GDP to foreign aid. Bono does not live, work, pay taxes or vote in Canada. Why does he get a one on one with the leader of the country to discuss how to spend the taxpayers dollars ? As a working, property owning, taxpaying, voting citizen of this country I too would like to discuss with our Prime Minister the different ways MY (and YOUR) tax dollars could be spent - health care, our own countries poverty stricken, just to name two. At the same time he was telling our Prime Minister how to spend Canada's money, Bono was also negotiating the purchase of a 20 Million dollar apartment in New York. F*#K OFF Boner ! You can bite me !

I don't doubt that Bono has good intentions. It's just that his ego is so huge and that he comes off as being so self-righteous. He was like that in the early days of U2 and he seems to be getting worse as he gets older. He also has no right to go around the world telling everyone that they have to pay more taxes to pay for more foreign aid. And it's especially hypocritical for him to keep saying this after he moved his own personal assets from Ireland to Holland just to get a break for himself on a lesser tax rate.

Why are the rest of us obligated to pay more of our money to finance the pet causes of obnoxious celebrities? It's annoying and it makes me lose all respect for people like Bono.

I don't know why everyone judges the wealthy so much. They are people too, with hearts, souls, happinesses, sadnesses, etc. They aren't sub human. What is wrong with making money and supporting the poor? What, are Oprah and Bono perfect? No. But look at all the super rich people in the world who do nothing to lift a finger for their fellow human. The Queen is only the 105th richest person in England, and she spends all her time doing charity work. How much of your time and money do you spend helping people? There is a place for decedance as well as helping the people around you.

Back off, you people, lest you be jjudged. Have you walked in their shoes?

Just my two bits, for what it is worth....
