Michael Jackson memorial recap

Getty Images The casket, draped in flowers, is brought before  a sombre Staples Center audience and the Michael Jackson memorial begins with Smokey Robinson reading condolence letters from Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.

This opening tribute is followed by a moment of silence, which becomes 15 minutes or more. I wonder if the broadcast is caught in a loop. Maybe the Staples Centre is experiencing audio troubles.

Whatever the case, we eventually return with a tribute from Pastor Lucius Smith, a friend of the Jackson family, followed by Mariah Carey performing I'll be There with Trey Lorenz.

Next is Queen Latifah, representing the fans who "grew up loving Michael from a distance" and talks about trying to dance and "be like Michael" when she was small, something to which many of us can relate. Latifah reads words by Maya Angelou, overly flowery perhaps.

One is reminded at this point that, by the time of his death, Jackson had become the object of quite some ridicule, but these events have restored much of the reverence (not all but a lot), and reminded many who had forgotten about Michael that he was once a force to be reckoned with.

Lionel Richie then performs The Commodores' Jesus is Love. The Commodores – of which Richie was once one - came to public attention opening for the Jackson 5 in 1972.

This is followed by a tribute from Motown records founder Berry Gordy, remembering Michael's first audition at the age of ten in 1968.

Cut to a montage. Video footage over which Michael is heard saying, "It feels good to be thought of as a person, not a personality."

Stevie Wonder performs a medley of I Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer, and They Won't Go When I Go, the haunting melody of the latter providing easily the most powerful moment thus far.

Next are speakers Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson -- The latter says the greatest moment of his life was sharing a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken with Michael -- then Jennifer Hudson sings Will You Be There from Dangerous (and the Free Willy soundtrack).

The Reverend Al Sharpton gets a standing ovation when he says to Michael's children "Weren't nothing strange about your Daddy. It was strange what he had to deal with," after which John Mayer performs an instrumental version of Human Nature.

Brooke Shields, a fellow child star who dated Michael in the 80s and has been a close friend ever since, gives the most touching and most normal tribute at this point. "It was the most natural and easiest of friendships," she says. "We would have fun no matter where we were." Shields informs us that Michael's favourites song was Smile from the Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times, written by Nat King Cole. An emotional Jermaine Jackson then comes out to sing it.

"Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, youll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you"

Bernice King and Martin Luther King III offer tribute next. This funeral sure has some great orators.

There are many references to Michael Jackson's great humanity, his thoughtfulness and selflessness.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee then addresses what others might rather not, perhaps making a dig at Peter King's recent anti-Jackson comments. "We understand the Constitution. We understand laws," she says. Then points out that, "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty." Bravo.

This speech is followed by Usher with Gone Too Soon after which we get a clip of Michael at the age of ten on the Ed Sullivan show, in 1969, performing Smokey Robinson's Who's Loving You. Smokey returns to say "That's my little brother over there. You just don't think you'll live to see him gone. He will never really be gone. He is going to live forever and ever and ever and ever."

Little Shaheen Jafargholi then performs the same song.

Finally the memorial wraps with large renditions of We are the World and Heal the World.

We end with family tributes, including brief words by Michael's tearful little daughter Paris Katherine. And that's enough now. Jackson brother Marlon sums up what many of us are thinking "Maybe now they will leave you alone."

Well GOD is good HE gave us Michael Jackson to share some love, and that Michael did, through his songs, his music, his dance, and above all his love. We have become such a judgemental society we think we are GOD ALMIGHTY and we have the right to judge. Well guess what we don't. To the family I pray your strength and your comfort knowing the world loved Michael and Michael loved the world for he gave all he had, his life. So when the next genius comes along the nay sayers should not be so quick to judge, love them and they will love you back.

I wish that people would have been as kind loving and giving to him as they were to day, when he was alive.

It is ashame that the public demanded so much from him. we watch movies that made fun of him, we watch as he was accused of other acusations. . us as a people should be ashamed by the way we Idalize some one who is just a person doing a awsome job.
We took his child hood, his privicey and mad him out play thing. ( not just micheal had this happen to him) I prey that people will look deep down to see how socity and gosip and selfishness has contributed to a man in sadness.... Thank you for all you have done for music, dance and helping others less fortunet Michael J. I applod you . R.I.P

Hi first of all, to the people like ie; FLORENCE ORLEANS, excuse me, anyone who saw that memorial today, unless you do not have a heart, would have been in tears. How can you be so cold? Excuse me, "give it a rest"? What the heck is that? This was, and is not just anybody, and I bet you do not get a send off like that! Especially when his daughter spoke! I also just read that they took out his brain, my god why would they do that, and what about his other organs, I know they have to examine them, but can't they put them back? I know they probably do it all the time, but it just sounds so awful, but then again no doubt the love he had in his heart, is now in his soul, in heaven, amen. But you know, this is a really sad time for millions of people, and those who did not like MJ should give their negative thoughts, and opinions a rest, something tells me the ones who love MJ far outweigh the ones who didn't.

No matter what others think about Michael Joseph Jackson does not matter. The facts remain that Michael Jackson made history with his talent and music.

I extend my sincere and deepest condolences to his family. Especially his mother Catherine who lost a son.

Regardless who we are and where we come from, we are all children of God and from the day we are born a timeline is set for each of us and when our time is up all we get to take with us is " what we have inside" our heart.

No one is perfect. No one is right, No one is just, We all have faults.
We all make mistakes... This is life...

May Michael Jackson rest in Peace. My the Lord confort his family, especially his Mother.

It's really funny to see people saying he was a child molester and such, when it's obvious they didn't read anything about the matter. I'll save the morons a few minutes of googling away from their porn and cheetos:

Michael was never convicted by a jury for child molestation, only arrested by the police after being accused. The "witnesses" gave totally differing testimony's and descriptions of events, and the parents even disagreed. Some fathers say their child was molested while the mother is adamant they were not. There was even a recording of the "victims" fathers saying how he could ruin Jackson with this, how much money he would get, and so on and so forth. Not to mention the fact that the children that said he molested him later confessed to coercion by their parents.

Michael Jackson was deeply scarred by these events and accusations. After putting his entire life on hold to do nothing but entertain and to make children smile, donating millions to charities, etc, he is accused of taking something from a child that he himself never had, innocence, and touching them in inappropriate ways. This in turn, has such an impact on him he turns to drugs to deal with the issues (not a wise choice but that is not the argument here), eventually becoming addicted. After a slight comeback, out came more allegations, which were again further proven untrue, and he slipped deeper into the addiction. This eventually became a lifestyle and led up to his death.

Michael Jackson was so deeply emotionally stressed and affected (he suffered panic attacks, stress attacks, chronic pain due to being burned, etc) by simply being accused of molesting children that it literally, later on, killed him. This is not the reaction of a child molester. I think the people that are accusing him of being the molester need to take their own advice and stop jumping on the bandwagon, that if they were to actually read up on, was largely influenced by the media putting a negative spin on things (as they often do currently still). Do some research, you might not put your foots in your mouths the next time you go to give your opinions.

RIP Michael, thanks for letting me grow up with you.

This incident has gooten way out of hand. Michael was responsible for his own actions, he was a spoiled kid who had it all and didn't know how to handle it. The one word that comes to mind is SELFISH, he had three kids that depended on him and loved him and he let them down badly by thinking only of himself. Did he ever stop to think what would happen to them if something happened to him? No, he just went on taking his drugs, and getting more and more dependant on them. He was out of control. This media coverage is disgusting, there are so many more important things going on in the world that could use news coverage but no, it is all spent on what?, a black boy who wanted to be a white boy, actions speak louder than words and his past actions said it all. Enuff said, let him be at peace, he never was in life.

This was a tragic end to a very sad life. He was not a molester. If he was he would have molested his own children instead of some losers child. There is a loser on every corner looking for a way to get quick cash. They saw Michael as an easy target and took advantage of that. Let him rest in peace now.

many crazy things have happened in the past. MJ was a man a human being. His whole life was filled with losers who wanted money. You can't sit there and tell me a 13 or 14 year old boy is going to sit there and take it, (if that is even true??). Only God can judge him now, but the heart ansd soul he had. I think that is what people hate it is just jealousy and prejudice. Hitler infleunced this world so much that even to this day we look up to the blond haired blue eyed people first. We emulate them and try to be white. I am not black or hispanic I am aboriginal to North America. Nuns and priests here hurt nearly desroyed my family. They raped and tortured my uncles and aunts so you really can't tell me that Michael Jackson deserves such hate, a minority having so much success will always bring these attitudes. I feel sorry for the family and all of us. Besides personal matters and an artitst's influence are two different kettle's of fish.

I didn't grow up with Michael Jackson.

Or if I did, he didn't register very much, because I was into classical music and other things.

So why do I even know, and give any attention, to someone like Michael Jackson?

Because there are very few people, in any field - i.e. politics, religion, entertainment, food, etc. - who stands out, once they are gone.

For example, in Canada, one of our prime ministers died. Long before he died, he had faded into obscurity. Other politicians had taken his place. Other people were making things happen.

But, the funny thing was, that when he died, people stoppped to take notice. And surprisingly, both friends and foes, stopped to notice. Why? Because he had made a difference. He had separated himself from the crowd. He stood out.

And you have to give Michael Jackson that much. When I talk about him with my classical music friends, they all say the same thing ... they noticed. He was ubiquitous, meaning he was everywhere even if you weren't paying attention. And I can assure you, most classical musicians, do not pay attention.

There are plenty of royals in the world. Diana stood out. There are a lot of religious people in the world - Ghandia and Sisiter Teresa stand out. There are plenty of TV personalities - Oprah stands out.

As does Michael Jackson. Even without appreciating his music or lyrics, he stands out.

Who's next? Who stands out, who is still living - Madonna, definitely, Oprah, for sure, who else? Probably Obama. We all have our 15 minutes of fame. Some of the others, have days and days of it.

These people are not flavour of the month. Whether we're secure enough or not to acknowledge it, they stood out from when they were kids, or when they began their professional careers. They were larger than life in their ambition, their ability to manipulate the media or to stand out, from sheer talent or the sheer scope of their ambition/dreams.

Something internal, makes them memorable.

I can't understand why people can be so cold to him. He touched us all with his music one way or another. May he now rest without anyone and I MEAN ANYONE bad talking him, judging and accusing him of anything. He was and still is a caring man with a BIG heart! Michael I hope you are now in peace and enjoying yourself and may God watch over everyone dear to you. I pray to one day met you on the other side.

It's sad that Mj had to die for people to finally give him the recognition he deserved. They finally realize that Micheal Jackson is a human being!!! It was nice to see people remembering him for all the good that he has accomplished in this world. People out for his money took advantage of his good nature and exploited him. If someone had done something to my kid -I would want justice-not money. They were money hungry animals.GOD is the only judge. One day the truth will be known-the day when we will all be judged.I hope that for the sake of Micheal, his family and his poor children people will finally LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Love you Micheal-R.I.P.
