Michael Jackson memorial recap

Getty Images The casket, draped in flowers, is brought before  a sombre Staples Center audience and the Michael Jackson memorial begins with Smokey Robinson reading condolence letters from Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.

This opening tribute is followed by a moment of silence, which becomes 15 minutes or more. I wonder if the broadcast is caught in a loop. Maybe the Staples Centre is experiencing audio troubles.

Whatever the case, we eventually return with a tribute from Pastor Lucius Smith, a friend of the Jackson family, followed by Mariah Carey performing I'll be There with Trey Lorenz.

Next is Queen Latifah, representing the fans who "grew up loving Michael from a distance" and talks about trying to dance and "be like Michael" when she was small, something to which many of us can relate. Latifah reads words by Maya Angelou, overly flowery perhaps.

One is reminded at this point that, by the time of his death, Jackson had become the object of quite some ridicule, but these events have restored much of the reverence (not all but a lot), and reminded many who had forgotten about Michael that he was once a force to be reckoned with.

Lionel Richie then performs The Commodores' Jesus is Love. The Commodores – of which Richie was once one - came to public attention opening for the Jackson 5 in 1972.

This is followed by a tribute from Motown records founder Berry Gordy, remembering Michael's first audition at the age of ten in 1968.

Cut to a montage. Video footage over which Michael is heard saying, "It feels good to be thought of as a person, not a personality."

Stevie Wonder performs a medley of I Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer, and They Won't Go When I Go, the haunting melody of the latter providing easily the most powerful moment thus far.

Next are speakers Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson -- The latter says the greatest moment of his life was sharing a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken with Michael -- then Jennifer Hudson sings Will You Be There from Dangerous (and the Free Willy soundtrack).

The Reverend Al Sharpton gets a standing ovation when he says to Michael's children "Weren't nothing strange about your Daddy. It was strange what he had to deal with," after which John Mayer performs an instrumental version of Human Nature.

Brooke Shields, a fellow child star who dated Michael in the 80s and has been a close friend ever since, gives the most touching and most normal tribute at this point. "It was the most natural and easiest of friendships," she says. "We would have fun no matter where we were." Shields informs us that Michael's favourites song was Smile from the Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times, written by Nat King Cole. An emotional Jermaine Jackson then comes out to sing it.

"Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, youll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you"

Bernice King and Martin Luther King III offer tribute next. This funeral sure has some great orators.

There are many references to Michael Jackson's great humanity, his thoughtfulness and selflessness.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee then addresses what others might rather not, perhaps making a dig at Peter King's recent anti-Jackson comments. "We understand the Constitution. We understand laws," she says. Then points out that, "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty." Bravo.

This speech is followed by Usher with Gone Too Soon after which we get a clip of Michael at the age of ten on the Ed Sullivan show, in 1969, performing Smokey Robinson's Who's Loving You. Smokey returns to say "That's my little brother over there. You just don't think you'll live to see him gone. He will never really be gone. He is going to live forever and ever and ever and ever."

Little Shaheen Jafargholi then performs the same song.

Finally the memorial wraps with large renditions of We are the World and Heal the World.

We end with family tributes, including brief words by Michael's tearful little daughter Paris Katherine. And that's enough now. Jackson brother Marlon sums up what many of us are thinking "Maybe now they will leave you alone."

Well GOD is good HE gave us Michael Jackson to share some love, and that Michael did, through his songs, his music, his dance, and above all his love. We have become such a judgemental society we think we are GOD ALMIGHTY and we have the right to judge. Well guess what we don't. To the family I pray your strength and your comfort knowing the world loved Michael and Michael loved the world for he gave all he had, his life. So when the next genius comes along the nay sayers should not be so quick to judge, love them and they will love you back.

I wish that people would have been as kind loving and giving to him as they were to day, when he was alive.

It is ashame that the public demanded so much from him. we watch movies that made fun of him, we watch as he was accused of other acusations. . us as a people should be ashamed by the way we Idalize some one who is just a person doing a awsome job.
We took his child hood, his privicey and mad him out play thing. ( not just micheal had this happen to him) I prey that people will look deep down to see how socity and gosip and selfishness has contributed to a man in sadness.... Thank you for all you have done for music, dance and helping others less fortunet Michael J. I applod you . R.I.P

Hi first of all, to the people like ie; FLORENCE ORLEANS, excuse me, anyone who saw that memorial today, unless you do not have a heart, would have been in tears. How can you be so cold? Excuse me, "give it a rest"? What the heck is that? This was, and is not just anybody, and I bet you do not get a send off like that! Especially when his daughter spoke! I also just read that they took out his brain, my god why would they do that, and what about his other organs, I know they have to examine them, but can't they put them back? I know they probably do it all the time, but it just sounds so awful, but then again no doubt the love he had in his heart, is now in his soul, in heaven, amen. But you know, this is a really sad time for millions of people, and those who did not like MJ should give their negative thoughts, and opinions a rest, something tells me the ones who love MJ far outweigh the ones who didn't.

No matter what others think about Michael Joseph Jackson does not matter. The facts remain that Michael Jackson made history with his talent and music.

I extend my sincere and deepest condolences to his family. Especially his mother Catherine who lost a son.

Regardless who we are and where we come from, we are all children of God and from the day we are born a timeline is set for each of us and when our time is up all we get to take with us is " what we have inside" our heart.

No one is perfect. No one is right, No one is just, We all have faults.
We all make mistakes... This is life...

May Michael Jackson rest in Peace. My the Lord confort his family, especially his Mother.

Connie, KC Canada

It's really funny to see people saying he was a child molester and such, when it's obvious they didn't read anything about the matter. I'll save the morons a few minutes of googling away from their porn and cheetos:

Michael was never convicted by a jury for child molestation, only arrested by the police after being accused. The "witnesses" gave totally differing testimony's and descriptions of events, and the parents even disagreed. Some fathers say their child was molested while the mother is adamant they were not. There was even a recording of the "victims" fathers saying how he could ruin Jackson with this, how much money he would get, and so on and so forth. Not to mention the fact that the children that said he molested him later confessed to coercion by their parents.

Michael Jackson was deeply scarred by these events and accusations. After putting his entire life on hold to do nothing but entertain and to make children smile, donating millions to charities, etc, he is accused of taking something from a child that he himself never had, innocence, and touching them in inappropriate ways. This in turn, has such an impact on him he turns to drugs to deal with the issues (not a wise choice but that is not the argument here), eventually becoming addicted. After a slight comeback, out came more allegations, which were again further proven untrue, and he slipped deeper into the addiction. This eventually became a lifestyle and led up to his death.

Michael Jackson was so deeply emotionally stressed and affected (he suffered panic attacks, stress attacks, chronic pain due to being burned, etc) by simply being accused of molesting children that it literally, later on, killed him. This is not the reaction of a child molester. I think the people that are accusing him of being the molester need to take their own advice and stop jumping on the bandwagon, that if they were to actually read up on, was largely influenced by the media putting a negative spin on things (as they often do currently still). Do some research, you might not put your foots in your mouths the next time you go to give your opinions.

RIP Michael, thanks for letting me grow up with you.

The live memorial was good for the world to view. Michael deserved one last publicity, his memorial on Stage. He earned it because he worked hard during the journey of his life.....
