Australia to crack down on lip-syncing performers

Getty Images Australian politicians are targeting Britney Spears and making her the poster girl for a proposed law that would force music stars to disclose whether they plan to lip-sync during their shows.

The Daily Telegraph says measures being considered by the State Government of New South Wales include performers being required to alert fans on tickets or posters if they plan to "mime." (I wish they wouldn't use the word "mime," which is "farce or mimicry" or communication through gesture and facial expression, without speech. I suppose it is technically correct but it really applies more to the theatrical artform and conjures up images of guys with painted white faces pretending to be trapped in boxes and tugging on imaginary ropes.)

The Telegraph says the talk comes as Britney arrives in Australia for 14 shows "during which she will lip-sync most of her performance." The paper points out that, "Some people forked out up to $1500 a ticket to see her perform live." (Wow.) The assumption here is that Australians do not know that Britney is lip-syncing, and that, if they did, they might not want to pay to see her perform.

Huh. Interesting theory.

The "Fair Trading Minister and Minister Assisting the Premier on the Arts" of New South Wales, the appropriately named Virginia Judge, is clear in her opinions on the subject. In People magazine she is quoted as saying, "Personally I would rather see a live set from a local artist but I am sure Britney's fans will be treated to a spectacular show." (Which looks, of course, like she means the exact opposite and that she thinks Britney's fans will NOT be treated to anything worth seeing.)

Apparently, care would be taken not to deter big names coming to Sydney but Judge gives the distinct impression she wouldn't care too much if Britney just stayed away. She says the people of Sydney will not tolerate a "Mickey Mouse performance," (Ha! Geddit?). She also said, "Let's be clear - live means live. If you are spending up to $200 I think you deserve better than a film clip.

"The NSW Government would be happy to look at options, such as a disclaimer on a ticket which would warn consumers a performance is pre-recorded."

We all have our own opinions on the lip-syncing thing but Judge sounds like a bit of a relic. "Live means live?" Does that mean just singing or no prerecorded music at all? If it's just singing, why? Shouldn't it be expanded to include instrumentation? Like, if an artist has an instrumental backing track, shouldn't they have to state that the second rhythm guitar is prerecorded? Are DJ's allowed? According to Judge's logic, Perez Hilton, who opens Britney's show on video, should have to travel with her everywhere she goes or the ticket should say "Perez Hilton only appears onscreen and is not actually in the room with you."

Just wait until artists start showing up via hologram.

In 2008, China introduced a "name and shame" policy after a little girl was discovered to be lip-syncing during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics – because the actual singer wasn't cute enough to represent China. An amendment on the culture ministry's website stated, "Performers must not cheat audiences by lip-synching, and concert organizers must not arrange for performers to lip-synch*."

It was also reported that the names of performers caught lip-syncing would be released to the public, and those nabbed twice in one year would have their performing licenses revoked.

The Telegraph did not say what Australia's proposed punishment for failure to comply with the law might be.

Elizabeth! You an idiot! I agree with JS. Put the talentless hoes out of business. It's a blatant rip off to pay $200 for a show where no one is performing. Britney is a prime culprit!! As far as your relic thinking. I do not think that the music/ dj's is the concern in her case. She does not sing in her concert! If she played an instrument like a band ie. U2, i would think that if they pre-rcorded their music they'd be in the same position. But they do not. Britney is a money grab in all sense. She doesn't write her songs, she doesn't sing them live and even in the recordoing studio, her album, if you are listening too it is the art and talent of an engineer who makes her sound like she can even sing!! If she can't do it live, she doesn't have the talent to being doing it in the first place! I agree with the Judge!! You are the relic!!

It's about time an official body recognized these performing frauds. Kudos to the Aussies.
Crack down on these lame ass "performers". In terms of backing instrumentation tracks, for live performers, maybe some limitations are in order, like more than 50% should be played live? I don't know. 80%! It's tough with electronic music. Dj's are a whole different issue...you know you're going to see someone spin. When you're paying money to see a singer perform live, they should deliver the essential thing that they do....sing! Not dance!

A huge BRAVO!! to Australia. It's high time that these talentless corporate shills have to reveal their charade.Back when I used to go to concerts,if the performers came on stage and lip-synched they'd have beer bottles thrown at their heads. And ticket prices were less than $15.
But if you are stupid enough to dole out $1500 to watch some overrated wind bag mime over a playing of one of her CDs,then you're an idiot that deserves what you get.

I think "THE BEST" proves that all britney fans truly are idiots. no one is jealous of britney spears, she's pathetic and doesn't deserve any bit of the success she's had. i wish canada would follow in australia's footprints and send talentless hicks like her packing.

lol, I can't imagine actually spending any amount of money on someone that's lip syncing... that's absolutely ridiculous.

if it's going to be prerecorded anyway, may as well put it out on film and go to a theatre to see it for $6-9...

What a display of talentless crap.
If the artists are so sure it won't have an effect on sales, then why not just let everyone know in the first place what's lip synced and what isn't? lol.

Judge is right. Elizabeth, your obvious bias is disgusting in this article. I'm sure the bias is permitted, but in this degree it's actually kind of annoying because your opinion is pretty lame... most people go to live concerts to see a singer / band perform, if every band went and just pretended to strum away at their guitars, etc... I'm sure you'd absolutely love that, right? Without any change in feelings towards their skill? lol.

I know I'd think a lot less of the "live" concert I was at if that was the case.
I'm sure the majority of people would agree... although, based on the supporters of Britney, her fanbase appears largely pre-pubescent.

I agree with what Australia is doing. If you are going to mime, lip sinc or whatever u want to call it, then at least let the fans know. I think it is a rip-off to get up on stage and not even sing for real

I wouldn't pay any kind of money to see anyone "live" if they are actually lip syncing. Live means exactly that with all the mistakes and misteps included. Plain and simple it is fraud if the show is advertised as 'live' and isn't.

And to "THE BEST", you need to get in touch with reality. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE is worth the money that the big names get. But as long as individuals like yourself continue to pay the outrageous prices, the will get the big money. Still doesn't mean they have talent.

Me, I will spend my money where it does the most - for my family, friends and community as well as local and overseas charities. So that's where my money goes as one of "all of you people out there including those who work" and I am happy. Why would I ever be jealous of someone like Britney Spears? If anything, I pity Britney Spears and envy people like Mother Theresa who did something with their life.

well I agree 1500 is a lot for a ticket but no one tell you have to buy it . Where we live if we buy the ticket over the internet they charge you 30 dollars in service charges is that fair no so I don't buy tickets online. and I don't go to shows that I can't afford. At some point it is Britney singing you go because you like her music and want to see her live and watch a show if that what it cost to see her and you want to go then what is to much .I hear it is a wonderful show and worth being there. Bravo Australia!!!!
They are a strong country which supports the freedom and rights of people. It is a right, that people get what they pay for. They pay their money to see a live performance...otherwise, they would have stayed at home and watched a recording of her lip syncing.

To get up and perform physically takes a lot of work and talent.
Lip Syncing isn't total easy either.
The orginallity of the show will be based on how Britney looks, not on her songs.
It is like any other theater type show, but not something that should be considered a live concert.
A "Live" music show should have a full band and a person(s) actually singing.
I think a lip syncing disclaimer is a good idea. I don't think it will cut down on the number of people attending by a great amount.

I agree that Live should be Live. If you are paying to go to a concert of LIVE music it makes sense to pay for live music. However if the artist (and I won't call these people musicians because they don't play instruments and half the time don't even write their own music) is going to lip sync I think the public should be allowed to know that. Then they can decide for themselves if they want a ticket to go or not. If I paid to someone LIVE and then found out later that they lip synced I'd be very upset.
